Sleep
The mattress is the one piece of equipment every guest tests for eight hours and mentions first in bad reviews. In the tropics it also fights humidity. Here is how to buy one that survives both.

No guest ever wrote a review about your wardrobe. Plenty have written one about your bed. Sleep quality is the core product of any accommodation, and on Bali the mattress has a second job the brochure never mentions: surviving 80 percent humidity, open-air rooms and a wash-day rhythm no home bedroom ever sees.
A retail mattress built for a dry, closed bedroom holds moisture in its foam layers. In a tropical villa that means mould blooming inside the core within a year, a sour smell no housekeeping can wash out, and a replacement bill that erases whatever the retail discount saved. Contract-grade mattresses solve for exactly this climate: ventilated borders that let the core breathe, treated anti-microbial ticking, and springs rated for nightly turnover rather than one familiar sleeper.
A home buyer solves for one back; a villa owner solves for a rotating cast of strangers. Mixed international guests rate medium-firm highest on average, which is why it is the standard we recommend across villas and boutique hotels. Then use a 5-7 cm topper as the adjustable layer: a plush topper softens a suite without replacing the core, and a worn topper costs a fraction of a worn mattress to replace.
In a rental, a waterproof breathable protector is the cheapest insurance in the building. Per our price list, a queen topper and protector set runs IDR 0.9-2.4 juta against IDR 3.5-12 juta for the mattress it protects. One spilled wine glass pays for the whole protector program. Buy two protectors per bed so laundry day never leaves a mattress bare, and expect a protected contract mattress to serve 7-10 years against 3-4 for an unprotected retail one.
Budget the sleep set as one system, not four purchases. Per our price list, a contract queen runs IDR 3.5-12 juta, the topper and protector set IDR 0.9-2.4 juta, and a hypoallergenic pillow set IDR 0.5-1.4 juta per key - call it IDR 5-16 juta per bed for a system that survives a decade of strangers. Spread over seven years of nights, the difference between a retail bed and a contract one is smaller than one night's rate, and only one of them risks a mould smell in year two. For multi-room projects the package builder prices the full sleep set per key, and pairing the order with a 3-par linen program means beds and sheets arrive as one delivery, inspected together.
Ask for the contract grade and wash-cycle rating, the warranty terms in Indonesia, whether borders are ventilated for tropical rooms, and whether delivery includes carrying to rooms and removing old units. A supplier who hesitates on any of the four is selling retail stock with a hotel sticker.
Medium-firm pocket spring for standard rooms, with plush toppers in honeymoon and master suites. It is the setup with the fewest complaints across mixed nationalities.
Inspect at year five, plan replacement by year seven to ten with protectors in daily use. Sagging over 2-3 cm or any smell means the review has already been written.
Not the current generation - terry and jersey faces with breathable membranes are silent and cool. Guests only notice the protector you did not use.
